Agate slices are among the most versatile items a gift shop, home decor brand or crystal retailer can stock. Cut from banded agate nodules and polished on both faces, each slice shows a different pattern of concentric rings, so a display of twenty looks like twenty different products. This guide explains what to check before ordering slices and coasters in bulk, based on how we cut and finish them in Khambhat.

Natural or dyed?

Most agate is pale grey, white or brown when it comes out of the ground. Slices sold in strong blue, purple, teal, pink or green have been dyed, a practice that goes back over a century and is entirely standard in the trade. Dyed slices are more colour-consistent and easier to sell as sets; natural slices sell to buyers who want subtle earth tones and an untreated stone. Neither is "better", but the description you give your own customers must say which it is. We label every listing as natural or dyed, and can supply mixed lots if you want both in one order.

Edges: plain, gold-plated or electroplated

A plain slice has its natural rough rim left intact. Electroplated slices have the rim coated in gold, silver, copper or rose-gold tone, which frames the pattern and makes the piece read as a finished decor object rather than a specimen. Plated edges cost more per piece and suit coasters, wall art and premium gift boxes; plain rims suit craft supply, jewellery making and resin work. Check that the plating runs evenly around the whole rim with no gaps on the underside, which is a sign of a rushed second-quality piece.

Sizes and thickness

Slices are graded by their longest measurement. Small pieces of 2 to 3 inches suit jewellery, keyrings and place cards; 3 to 4 inches is the coaster standard; 4 to 6 inches and above are used for cheese boards, wall hangings and centrepieces. Thickness matters more than most buyers expect: a coaster needs 5 to 7 mm so it does not flex or chip, while thin 3 to 4 mm slices are lighter to ship and fine for hanging decor. Because agate is a natural material, sizes within a lot vary; ask for the size range of the lot rather than assuming a single measurement.

What to look for on quality

  • Polish: both faces should be mirror-flat with no drag marks. Hold the slice at an angle to the light to check.
  • Cracks: natural fissures are common in agate. A hairline within the band pattern is normal; a crack that reaches the edge will eventually split, so it should not be in a first-grade lot.
  • Drusy cavities: the sparkling quartz centre is a feature, but sharp crystal points inside a coaster cavity will scratch glassware. Coaster lots should be cut from solid or fine-drusy material.
  • Consistency of colour in dyed lots, and of pattern density in natural lots, if you sell them as sets.

How coasters are finished

Coasters are slices selected for flatness and a solid centre, usually 3.5 to 4.5 inches, with cork or felt bumpers fitted underneath on request so they do not scratch tables. Sets of four or six matching slices are the usual retail unit. Engraved coasters, with a flower of life, tree of life, zodiac sign or custom logo cut into the polished face, are a growing part of our production and give retailers a product no marketplace seller can copy exactly.

Ordering, packing and shipping

Each product page on our site shows the minimum order quantity for that item, and mixed orders across different slices, coasters and other categories are welcome. Slices are wrapped individually and packed in double-wall cartons; in-stock items ship within 5 to 7 days of order confirmation, by courier for smaller parcels and by air or sea freight for larger consignments, with export documents prepared for your customs clearance. Payment is by bank transfer or PayPal.
